Filming Basics

โœจ PAN'S RULE: If it's not chaotic, it's not magic! โœจ

Lighting, framing, and audio โ€” the three pillars of professional-looking video. Learn why most amateur videos fail (hint: it's not the camera).

๐Ÿ”’ PRIVACY SHIELD: When building apps, games, or AI tools, never hardcode or share your real name, home address, passwords, or private data. Build walled gardens and keep your digital footprint safe!

Key Concepts

๐Ÿ’ก
Lighting
A well-lit subject filmed on a phone looks better than a poorly-lit subject on an expensive camera. Always face your primary light source.
๐Ÿ“
Framing
The Rule of Thirds divides your frame into a 3ร—3 grid. Place your subject at intersections for a naturally pleasing composition.
๐ŸŽ™๏ธ
Audio
Viewers will forgive mediocre video quality but not bad audio. Get as close to your mic as possible and eliminate background noise.
๐Ÿ“ท
Camera Angles
Eye-level feels natural and honest. Low angle feels powerful. High angle feels intimate. Choose an angle intentionally โ€” don't default to whatever is easiest.

Lighting: The Three-Point Setup

Good lighting doesn't mean spending money. It means understanding how light works. The three-point setup is used in professional studios โ€” but it's easy to recreate at home.

โ˜€๏ธ
Key Light (Primary)
Your main light source. Position it 45ยฐ above and to one side of your face. A window in front of you is free and works perfectly.
๐ŸŒค๏ธ
Fill Light (Secondary)
On the opposite side of the key light, softer brightness. Reduces harsh shadows. A white foam board reflecting light works as a free fill.
๐Ÿ”ฆ
Back Light (Rim)
Behind and above you, aimed at the back of your head and shoulders. Creates a rim of light that separates you from the background.
๐Ÿ’ก
Free Pro Tip
Sit facing a window during the day. Natural daylight from the front is the best key light you can use โ€” and it costs nothing. Never film with a window behind you (your face will be a dark silhouette).
