Filming Basics
Lighting, framing, and audio โ the three pillars of professional-looking video. Most amateur videos fail not because of a bad camera, but because they get these three wrong. Let's fix that.
Key Concepts
Lighting
A well-lit subject filmed on a phone looks better than a poorly-lit
subject on an expensive camera. Always face your primary light source.
Framing
The Rule of Thirds divides your frame into a 3ร3 grid. Place your subject
at intersections for a naturally pleasing composition.
Audio
Viewers will forgive mediocre video quality but not bad audio. Get as
close to your mic as possible and eliminate background noise.
Camera Angles
Eye-level feels natural and honest. Low angle feels powerful. High angle
feels intimate. Choose an angle intentionally โ don't default to whatever is easiest.
Lighting: The Three-Point Setup
Good lighting doesn't mean spending money. It means understanding how light works. The three-point setup is used in professional studios โ but it's easy to recreate at home.
Key Light (Primary)
Your main light source. Position it 45ยฐ above and to one side of your
face. A window in front of you is free and works perfectly.
Fill Light (Secondary)
On the opposite side of the key light, softer brightness. Reduces harsh
shadows. A white foam board reflecting light works as a free fill.
Back Light (Rim)
Behind and above you, aimed at the back of your head and shoulders.
Creates a rim of light that separates you from the background.
Free Pro Tip
Sit facing a window during the day. Natural daylight from the front is the best key light you can use โ and it costs nothing. Never film with a window behind you (your face will be a dark silhouette).
