Solar Energy & How It Works

The sun sends enough energy to Earth in ONE hour to power all of human civilization for an ENTIRE YEAR. We just need to catch it. Learn how photovoltaic cells turn light into electricity.

1. Key Concepts

โš›๏ธ

The Photovoltaic Effect

When photons (light particles) hit a silicon solar cell, they knock electrons loose. That movement of electrons is electricity. "Photo" = light, "voltaic" = electricity. Discovered in 1839!

DC vs AC Power

Solar panels produce DC (Direct Current). Your home runs on AC (Alternating Current). An inverter converts between them. Batteries (like Tesla Powerwall) store excess solar power for use at night.

The 90% Price Drop

Solar electricity cost $101 per watt in 1976. Today it costs under $0.20 per watt โ€” a 99.8% price reduction. This is why solar is now the cheapest source of electricity in history, and growing faster than any other energy source.

Why It Matters

Burning fossil fuels releases COโ‚‚ that traps heat, warming the planet. Solar produces zero emissions. Every rooftop solar panel installed reduces carbon output and slows climate change โ€” one photon at a time.

3. Exercise: Solar Panel Designer

Build your virtual solar array! Click cells to activate them (turn them on to catch sunlight). See how adding more cells increases your power output. Get the panel to 100% power to complete the exercise!

4. Your Project: Energy Audit

๐Ÿ  Mission: Solar Your Home

Research how much energy your home uses and calculate how many solar panels it would need.

  • Ask a parent for your home's monthly electricity use in kWh (it's on the bill).
  • A typical solar panel produces ~400W, or ~50kWh/month in a sunny area.
  • Divide your monthly usage by 50 to get the number of panels you'd need.
  • Use Google's Project Sunroof โ†’ to see the solar potential of your actual home address!
