What Makes a Great Game?

You've played hundreds of games. But have you ever stopped to ask: why do some games keep you up until 2am, while others feel boring in 10 minutes? The answer is game design โ€” and it's a science.

1. Key Concepts

โš™๏ธ

Game Mechanics

Mechanics are the rules and interactions that make up a game. Jump, shoot, collect, build โ€” each is a mechanic. The best games have simple mechanics that combine in interesting ways.

๐Ÿ”„

The Challenge Loop

Great games have a "flow": challenge โ†’ attempt โ†’ feedback โ†’ reward โ†’ harder challenge. Too easy = boring. Too hard = frustrating. The sweet spot keeps players in "flow state."

๐Ÿง

Player Psychology

Games tap into our desire for achievement, discovery, and social connection. Games like Minecraft let you create. Games like Among Us rely on social dynamics. Different games satisfy different human needs.

The GDD

A Game Design Document (GDD) is the blueprint for a game โ€” like an architect's plan. It describes the concept, mechanics, characters, levels, and art style before a single line of code is written.

4. Your Project: Write a Mini GDD

๐Ÿ“ Mission: Design Your Dream Game

Write a one-page Game Design Document for a game you'd want to play. It doesn't have to be buildable yet โ€” just be creative!

  • Title & Genre: What is it called? Is it a platformer, puzzle, adventure, or something new?
  • Core Mechanic: What is the ONE thing a player does most?
  • Challenge Loop: What's the challenge โ†’ attempt โ†’ reward cycle?
  • Visual Style: Pixel art? Cartoon? Dark and moody?
  • What human need does it satisfy? Achievement? Creativity? Social fun?

You Think Like a Designer! โญ

Understanding WHY games are fun is the first โ€” and hardest โ€” step to making them. You've already done what most game developers skip.
